Malawi Government Stakeholders Convene at UniPod to Shape AI Solutions for Public Service Delivery
Government representatives, innovation leaders, academia, and development partners gathered today at UniPod Malawi for a strategic stakeholder engagement workshop aimed at identifying high-impact Artificial Intelligence (AI) use cases that can transform public service delivery across Malawi.
The workshop forms part of the AI for Public Good Challenge, an initiative supported by UNDP through the timbuktoo UniPod network. The programme seeks to connect government institutions facing real operational challenges with university talent capable of developing practical AI-driven solutions.
During the engagement, participants from various government ministries, departments, and agencies explored key challenges affecting service delivery and discussed how Artificial Intelligence can be leveraged to improve efficiency, decision-making, accessibility, and citizen outcomes.
The discussions focused on identifying priority areas where AI can create meaningful impact, including healthcare, agriculture, education, public administration, climate resilience, social protection, data management, and citizen service delivery.
Speaking during the workshop, stakeholders emphasised that Malawi has an opportunity to harness emerging technologies not only to modernise government operations but also to address longstanding development challenges through locally developed solutions.
The AI for Public Good Challenge aims to bridge the gap between government needs and university innovation by transforming real-world public sector problems into challenge briefs that multidisciplinary student teams can address. Through mentorship, access to advanced AI infrastructure, and collaboration with government institutions, students will develop prototypes and solutions designed for practical adoption.
UniPod Malawi serves as one of five African innovation hubs participating in the programme, alongside South Africa, Rwanda, Zambia, and Togo. The initiative provides access to sovereign AI computing infrastructure, enabling participants to build and test advanced AI applications without the barriers often associated with high-performance computing.
The stakeholder workshop marks the beginning of a collaborative journey that will see government institutions work closely with innovators, researchers, and students to co-create solutions that can strengthen public service delivery and contribute to Malawi's digital transformation agenda.
As the discussions concluded, participants expressed optimism that the initiative would unlock new opportunities for innovation while positioning Malawi as an active contributor to Africa's growing AI ecosystem.
The AI for Public Good Challenge represents more than a competition; it is a platform for building practical, scalable, and locally relevant AI solutions that address real challenges faced by governments and citizens across the continent.
