Applications Now Open for the AI for Public Good Challenge

We are excited to announce the launch of the AI for Public Good Challenge, an initiative that brings together government ministries and multidisciplinary recent-graduate teams to develop practical, responsible AI solutions to real public-sector challenges in Malawi.

The challenge creates an opportunity for emerging innovators to apply their skills, creativity, and knowledge to problems that matter—while working alongside mentors and relevant government ministry focal points.

Five Challenges. One Opportunity to Make an Impact.

This year, government ministries submitted 18 AI use cases through the program. Following a rigorous evaluation process by a multi-stakeholder panel, five use cases have been shortlisted for implementation under the AI for Public Good Challenge.

The selected challenges are now available for eligible multidisciplinary teams to explore and apply for.

The Challenge Briefs outline the real-world problems that need to be addressed. They do not prescribe the solutions.

That is where you come in.

Applicants are encouraged to think critically and creatively, proposing focused and feasible AI solutions that can create meaningful public value. Teams should also consider key issues such as data availability, privacy, ethics, responsible AI and real-world implementation.

How the Challenge Works

The AI for Public Good Challenge follows a collaborative journey from problem identification to solution development:

1. Government ministries identify public-sector challenges where AI could potentially create value.

2. A multi-stakeholder panel reviews the submitted use cases, considering public value, feasibility, data readiness, and responsible AI considerations.

3. Five use cases are selected and published as challenges. Briefs, giving eligible multidisciplinary recent-graduate teams an opportunity to apply.

4. Selected teams work with mentors and relevant ministry focal points to develop, test, and present practical AI solutions.
